Kirsten Williams

Registered Teacher / Behaviour Support Practitioner

In 2014 I graduated with a Bachelor of Education (K-7) and have worked in various teaching roles since that time.

My roles have predominantly been with children and young people with special needs, such as autism spectrum disorder. In addition to my roles as a qualified teacher, I have worked as a therapy assistant, support worker and ABA practitioner. This varied experience has allowed me the opportunity to combine my skills and knowledge into working as a Positive Behaviour Support Practitioner.

Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) is an effective approach to supporting children and young people with behaviours that challenge. PBS focuses on understanding the purpose of the behaviour and replacing it through adaptive alternatives by teaching new skills in a positive way. Challenging behaviour can be a barrier to academic, social, and emotional success in the environments the child or young person is a part of. Children and young people with developmental disabilities may require extra support in developing and using the social, emotional, and behavioural skills they need to navigate their current and future life stages successfully. In this role, I enjoy supporting the team around an individual to improve their quality of life with respect, and dignity, and helping them access their local community with genuine friendships and good mental and physical health.
